Product Description

This book is designed to provide pre-service and practicing teachers with instruction that will assist them in developing a sound understanding of both the content and pedagogy of phonics. Faculty who already face content overload will find the book teacher-friendly and immediately applicable to web-based instructional models. The book uses sound learning principles by providing students with meaningful practice and immediate feedback through chapter practices, cumulative reviews, pre-tests, and post-tests. This book recognizes that, although phonics is only one of several word recognition techniques, it remains the one that is least understood by practicing and prospective teachers, with the ultimate goal of making phonics more easily understood and useable in the classroom.

FEATURES:

  • Emergent Literacy and Phonics chapter

    • Identifies for teachers how to assess young children's readiness including print awareness, concepts of print, sense of story, oral language, and writing.

  • Coverage of both content and pedagogy.
    • Provides more than a tutorial on phonics.

5 out of 5 stars Review   July 29, 2010

This book is awesome for anyone beginning their reading courses for elementary education or even current teachers who need to freshen up on their phonics. The book has quizzes after each chapter and also cumulative quizzes after each chapter that includes questions from the previous chapters. Great, informative book. FAST shipping, awesome price. Thanks.

2 out of 5 stars Could be better   March 24, 2010

I bought this book for a class I was taking. It's not a bad book however, if you have any experience with IPA or other phonics ... it's confusing. The reviews at the end of the chapter are tedious & repeat as you get further along. I suppose that if you don't need to complete the book for class it might be better. Overall I wouldn't reccomend this book. There has to be something better for phonics boot camp.

5 out of 5 stars Phonics for teachers who were never taught phonics   October 8, 2009

This book was exactly what I was looking for. I learned to read by the whole word method and don't remember much or anything about phonics. Now I am studying to be a reading specialist and tutoring on the side and this book is perfect to bring me up to speed. It previews and summarizes each unit. It is interactive. I recommend it to educators.

This book is a good resource for teaching phonics. It has good ideas on assessing and teaching phonemic assessment and other phonics skills. Of particular interest is chapter 5, where 45 phonics generalizations are given along with information on how many words fit the pattern and how many exceptions there are. For example, referring to the "When two vowels go walking the first does the talking and it's long" rule, 309 words, such as "bead," follow the rule. On the other hand, 377 words do not follow the rule, as in "chief." This rule has 45 percent utility. Based on this, I'm not going to teach that rule anymore. If you are strong in phonics, there are still good ideas on assessing, teaching, auditory discrimination, and other skills. The book contains information on vowel patterns, i.e., VCCV, and syllabication, affixes, and accenting.

5 out of 5 stars Self-Paced Phonics: Keeping Educators Ahead   February 23, 2006

Self-Paced Phonics is a superb text for new teachers and seasoned veterans alike. It provides detailed instruction in the rules of phonics, vowel and consonant sounds, and the vocabulary of phonics instruction. As I was always an excellent student in language arts, I had no idea that there was so much that I had forgotten. I have improved my teaching skills in the area of phonics tremendously as a result of using this workbook, and it shows in the amazing progress my students have made. This workbook should be an itegral part of any teacher training/education program.
